anarchist quote

2002-09-25 - 12:00 a.m.

Heehee, ran into this quote in a .sig file and had to look up a link.

"Those who will not follow are doomed to lead." From the Anarchist card in Magic the Gathering.

Men in Black meets Punky Brewster

2002-09-23 - 4:46 p.m.

I love bad reviews sometimes.

I saw that "Lilo and Stitch" was playing at the nearby cheap cinema, and wanted to make sure it was something I'd like. From the cinema's web site, I clicked to get Yahoo! reviews of it.

I clicked a few positive reviews: "Wow, it's like, the best movie ever!" "You'll love it, it rules!" Okay, on to the bad reviews. A few made it sound interesting. One said it's good for kids and some adults may not like it, but not recommended for teenage males. Okay, that's one plus.

Then I hit on this gem. Key phrases: "why did everyone have really fat legs?" and "This movie tried to be Men in Black meets Punky Bruster (sic)." Wow, they don't all look like Barbie (tm) dolls? And someone claims it even tries to be Men in Black meets Punky Brewster? This I have to see!

I loved "Lilo and Stitch." It was a riot. Two good Disney experiences within one week! Amazing.

The Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Room

2002-09-23 - 4:40 p.m.

I love Disneyland when it isn't crowded. It wasn't even open very late, and we got there late, but my domestic partner and I went on everything we wanted to (that was open... the Matterhorn is being renovated).

We got stuck on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and got to walk off of it. The Tiki Room was pleasant and cool inside, though I had the horrible realization that working there for a long time could be really maddening. Peter Pan had the longest line, 15 minutes. Space Mountain, Indiana Jones, Star Tours, Splash Mountain, and others we basically just walked on.

We saw my mom and had lots of fun. I'm happy we went. I want to go back down that way soon.

Memories and love

2002-09-16 - 3:28 a.m.

Why am I in the 70's tonight? Somewhere from 1973 to 1979, maybe 1980 too, thinking about a girl I knew back then, wondering what she's up to. She made a lasting impression on me, that's for sure. A lot of my initial thoughts of what girls are like came from her. That explains some things...

Playing Russian (pretend you're a spy) made just sneaking around quietly seem cool. She dressed me up like a girl for fun, and that's still a fun thing to do. She could say silly things with a straight face, while I would crack up.

On a different note, I was thinking recently about how I started to love the people at KVO, and that made a lot of difference when I was helping them with computer issues. I think if I can get to that level again with a job, it can become easier to work at... it just happens naturally. I like helping people out, and that usually drives me at work, but that was really a nice experience.

train hopping with Mom

2002-09-15 - 11:06 p.m.

I almost forgot, I woke up this afternoon from a rather odd dream. Mom and I were train-hopping. We hopped off the train to switch. I landed fine, but Mom fell and hurt herself a little. It seemed to be at an intersection near her house. She landed near a car, and I helped her up. She said something about being too old for this sort of thing.

I don't know where we were headed.

linux, creativity

2002-09-15 - 10:28 p.m.

I wish to express myself creatively.

I've been tweaking my new Linux install on my main PC, trying to get everything to work, little by little. Debian is nice, but I've run into a few problems. At least my sound card is finally supported, wasn't the last time I had Linux on that PC.

I haven't put Win98 back on that hard drive... I imagine running into some headaches with that, so that will happen on a day off. I think I may be able to run the Kanon game under Wine, with full Japanese Windows type support, which would be really cool. I haven't seen Japanese Windows 98 for sale on eBay for a while now.

The main thing I want right now is the ability to watch DivX ;) video, so I can get my anime fix. I liked XMPS a lot, but it seems it hasn't been maintained in over a year now. ;(

I want to do some sketches and put them up on a web site. I want to compose music, write poetry, write stories. I want to build something cool inside a Mac SE case I have lying around. I want to modify a pair of shoes to add a fan or two for ventilation. I want to make cool modifications to the trailer... which leads me to remember the skirting, the gas line to the dryer, and the slide-out shelf projects. That reminds me of the debt I'm in... blah.

I'm going to Southern California in a few days, with my domestic partner. It should be fun.

relax / back-to-church

2002-09-09 - 2:16 a.m.

Actually, I'm about done with recapping Con Jose. It was a nice con. I was sad and thoroughly exhausted when it finished. I dropped off Debbie from the con just in time to head to a 12-hour shift at work. Whee.

After two days back at work, I spent my next weekend doing very little. A bill paid here, a little Debian GNU Linux server configuration there... plenty of sitting around.

Oh, I took my domestic partner and her rat Frothy to the vet on what would have been a work day for her. Frothy is recovering nicely. My domestic partner won't be having any work days for a while. I think we are going to Southern California to celebrate this wednesday-weekend.

And I did go to church. I really had missed it, and the message welcomed me back. I saw my sister there on her way out, and ran into some friends there. We had lunch together at Fresh Choice. Since I got my usual vegan stuff, and they got food free of molds and yeasts (some kind of thyroid-attacking thing runs in their family), we talked a lot about diet (what sorts of stuff you eat) vs. going on a diet / weight loss. Naturally, I plugged anysize.org. Maybe I should have solicited for articles... Some people really like that I will take most any submission to my site. Hint hint.

Now I'm really tired from doing so much in the middle of the day this weekend, but I think it was worth it. Maybe I can go to church every 2 weeks semi-regularly.

Con Jose part 1

2002-09-02 - 8:18 p.m.

Okay, this is my first post recapping Con Jose. I got 4 hours of sleep last night (yes, night time, which is why my body decided I was just taking a nap), and spent the whole day at the con just before dropping off Debbie and going to work. So I may not make the most sense I've ever made, or remember everything I want to remember.

I'm trying to remember Thursday, when the con started, but it's all a jumble, so I'll try some free association. I had some hanging out, talking, and cuddling time with Menolly. Not a lot, lots of con stuff going on and sleeping during the day mostly... must visit again. I hung out with Debbie a lot, and realised I don't hang out with Debbie often enough. Cause she's... Debbie.

I also spent lots of time with my Domestic Partner, all of it good, which was nice. That reminds me, I tried to pick up her badge Thursday. "I would like to pick up my domestic partner's badge. Same address, purchased at the same time, same check." Registration person: "Do you have his I.D. or Con Jose mailing?" I was amused at first that they assumed my domestic partner was male. Then I thought it could be a discriminatory assumption. Anyway, I like using the term, even though it's awkward. I may be helping to bring it into common usage.

I think it's partly Debbie's fault, but I seem to be getting better at DDR. I even got an A on a very easy song!

I didn't make it to any panels. I didn't dress up. I didn't throw a party or even get Zero shown at a party (I came close... compatibility issues won).

I did hand out a few CDs (and one tape) of Zero. I did buy some earrings in the dealer's room (frog stud-type earrings, which I'm wearing now). I did give money to other conventions: full membership, pre-support, and conversion to full membership. I did volunteer to help out the bid for Worldcon 2007 in Japan. They said they could use help from native English speakers to clean up materials translated from Japanese into English. Yay! I did get my hair braided by Debbie, twice, and I attempted to French-braid her hair. I'm now at work with two reverse-French braids that come together at the bottom. I look girly. :) I did hit most of the parties, though lots of them seemed way too crowded and loud and boring, bad combination.

Thinking back on it, Sunday night, the Green Realms party, though it seemed eerie and almost scary, and some of the food was unrecognizable (it was described as food from alien worlds), it was creative and relaxed and probably the most interesting party I made it to that night. They were hyping a book they were still trying to sell to a publisher, by the way.

I hit Tapestry this morning looking for food and found someone willing to make me a falafel at 8:30am! It was just the right thing to eat after sleeping 4 hours at night, too.

I'm crazy for staying at the con all day after half enough sleep, then going right to work for a 12-hour shift. But if I'd gone back home to sleep for work, I would have felt crazy for missing the last of the con. It may seem crazy to offer to take someone home "later" who is still under some degree of parental rule, miss the train to the car, get the car around 5am, then take that person to go eat and return hir home at 6:30am, but there was no set time limit, and we were hungry. I would do both things again.

I know it was a good con... I'm quite sad that it's over. The post-con blues aren't too bad though, as the next two months have two cons each that I will be attending (both times it's consecutive weekends too!). Even odder, October has two local cons I'm going to, while November I'll be going from Portland to L.A.
